MMFF is far from over, but there are Pinoy films ripe for the taking this January. All three major studios have their own opening salvos for 2018, each one promising.
Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes (January 17)
Starring Judy Ann Santos and Angelica Panganiban
Directed by Jun Lana
Two wives find out their husbands are in a gay relationship.
My take: The hook itself makes the movie very intriguing. It subverted my expectation that it’s another wife-mistress story. With Jun Lana (Die Beautiful) at the helm, I’m sure the queer angle would be treated sensitively. And glad to see Judy Ann Santos and Gladys Reyes as friends this time!
Mama’s Girl (January 17)
Starring Sofia Andres and Sylvia Sanchez
Directed by Connie SA Macatuno
A mother guides her adulting daughter through heartbreak, failure, and picking up the pieces.
My take: Did I just watch the synopsis of the whole film? On top of that, the trailer feels a little bit unfocused as it juggled Sylvia’s scenes with Sofiego’s. Looking forward though to Sylvia Sanchez’s first starring movie role. And wow, Jameson Blake’s on a roll.
Mr. & Mrs. Cruz (January 24)
Starring Ryza Cenon and JC Santos
Directed by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo
Two soul searchers are entangled in an unusual love story.
My take: Just by marketing it as from the writer and director of Kita Kita would put butts on seats. The Ryza-JC tandem also looks very interesting, as they belong to two different networks and wouldn’t normally work together. This is like another hit in the making.
Which of the three are you most excited to watch? Sound off in the comments below.
