In Focus: My Perfect You

Despite his hardcore loveteam roots, Gerald Anderson has had some degree of success being paired off with different partners like Liza Soberano, Arci Munoz, Shaina Magdayao, and Dianne Medina. It helps that he’s such a brilliant actor, so it didn’t come as surprise that he was chosen to be Pia Wurtzbach’s leading man in her launching movie.

In My Perfect You, Burn (Gerald Anderson), a heartbroken graphic artist, meets Abi (Pia Wurtzbach), a quirky resort owner who teaches him to love again. The contrast in their personalities leads to some hilarious situations in the first act. Enter Abi’s ragtag group of friends who each have their own eccentricities. The camaraderie that gets built among the five is definitely the best part of the movie.

But just when you think that things are finally looking up for Burn, the story takes an unexpected direction that frankly may or may not work for viewers. Some people coming in expecting the usual romcom might feel deceived as promo materials didn’t exactly prepare them for it. The reception in the theater was quite mixed, and I understand the frustration given how well the movie set up the five’s friendship.

Then again, it’s commendable how brave the film is to risk that type of twist in a mainstream film. And with this and Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes, Star Cinema seems to have a knack now at easing in touchy subjects into its releases without losing their watchability and entertainment value. This is another win for them.

A lot of it banks on the acting ability of Gerald Anderson, and boy does he deliver. After watching him in On The Job and AWOL, he again shows how much range he has as an actor, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets nominated for this performance. Pia isn’t a slouch either. Remember that she was part of the Angeline Aguilar-Bea Alonzo trio that appeared in shows like K2BU. While she isn’t as active in acting, she still knows how to work it.

All in all, My Perfect You is not your typical romcom film. Come in with an open mind and enjoy the ride.

Random Notes (SPOILERS BELOW)

  • I’d like to give a special shoutout to Dimples Romana. Wow!
  • Once the twist was introduced, some hints early on emerged with new meaning – for example, not wanting to check out. But I think there’s no need for too many flashbacks.
  • I had a hunch something was hallucinatory at the resort. The color palette was quite whimsical and Abi was acting a bit dazed.
  • With any other established pairing like KathNiel or LizQuen, Star Cinema wouldn’t be able to pull this storyline off. I could just imagine the Twitter outrage!
